Help Rav Levi Yitzchak wipe away your tears
Rosh Hashanah in Berditchev in the shadow of the tzaddik. The Rebbe himself stands before the bimah, resembling a heavenly angel. His lips Utter the awe-inspiring prayers; his pure voice rises in heartfelt tefillah and his heart soars with lofty Thoughts as he beseeches the Creator and Master of the world on behalf of his flock…
He begins the stirring Prayers, “L’Kel Orech din”, his voice resounding mightily throughout the shteibel. He reaches the words “L’Koneh avadav badin, He who acquires His servants in judgment,” and suddenly his voice stills. His pure face, bedecked in a tallis, turns deathly white. One minute passes, and then another, and another, yet the Rebbe does not continue his tefillah.
All is silent in the shteebel, and the congregation tremble in fear and awe of the moment. Spontaneously, the Rebbe awakens from his reverie and continues with poignant prayers that reduce the entire congregation to tears and evoke soul-wrenching supplications.
On motzaei Yom Tov, the Rebbe recounts exactly what transpired during those chilling moments:
“My eyes beheld precisely what occurred at that time in the heavenly courtroom… I watched in growing dread as the Satan loaded weighty sacks onto the scale. In terror I saw the scale shift downward—toward destruction…
“I knew that something had to be done! If I didn’t take action immediately, it would be too late. Furtively, I approached the scale, poked holes in the giant sacks and let all the sins spill out.
“The Satan caught me red-handed and began screaming, “Ganav! Ganav! Thief! Thief!”
“I ran away, fleeing the Satan. Yet he was stronger and faster than me, and he caught me and dragged me to the Ribono shel Olam to be punished as a thief.
“You must pay double!” thundered the heavenly decree.
“But I don’t have what to pay!”
I argued. “The sins are destroyed, and I already transformed them into zechuyos!”
“In that case, you must sell yourself into servitude,”
came the verdict. “Behold, the Torah states: ‘One who does not have [money to repay], he shall be sold because of his theft’”.
“I agree!” I cried. ‘Father in heaven, acquire me as Your servant!’
“And thus,” concluded the tzaddik, “the decree was sealed for a year of life goodness and peace"
